Festivals in Summer in Vietnam
1. Phat Dan (8th day of the 4th lunar month)
Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated by devotees throughout Vietnam, despite being a communist country. Many temples are adorned with lavish decorations with locals offering fruit, flower garlands, and various Vietnamese dishes. This event often draws thousands of visitors looking to partake in street parades and prayer sessions.
Hoi An is arguably the best place to enjoy this festivity. Held at Phap Bao Pagoda, the day starts with a procession of monks along the streets of Hoi An Ancient Town before locals flock to the temple to perform religious rites and listen to Buddhist scriptures. In the evening, expect a lively parade along the main road of the Old Town, where animals are released while flower garlands and lanterns are placed along the riverbank. Aside from experiencing the local culture, Buddha’s Birthday is also a great time to enjoy vegetarian dishes sold by street vendors in Hoi An.

2. Tet Doan Ngo (5th day of the 5th lunar month)
“Doan Ngo Festival”, (translated as Festival for “Killing the persons’ inner insects”), is the second most significant festival (to the Lunar New Year Tet Holiday) of Vietnam. The name “Tet sau bo” derives from the fact that farmers, on this day, get rid of all pests to start growing their crops for the new season. On this occasion, the whole family has to get up early and eat fermented sticky and fruits. The worshipping is held at noon, the hour of Ngo.
The two traditional types of food eaten on this holiday are ‘banh u’ and ‘com ruou’. Banh u is pyramidal sticky rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves. Com ruou, which literally translates as “rice wine,” are little balls of fermented rice bathed in wine.

3. Trang Nguyen (or Vu Lan) (14th or 15th day of the 7th lunar month)
The day of wandering souls is the second most important festival after Tet. Offerings of food and clothes are made to comfort and nourish the unfortunate souls without a home, and all graves are cleaned. This is also time for the forgiveness of faults when the King of Hell judges everyone’s spirits and metes out reward or punishment as appropriate. Until the fifteenth-century prisoners were allowed to go home on this day.
In 2019, Vu Lan takes place from 14th to 15th August 2019.
4. Giong Festival (6th – 12th day of the 4th lunar month)
Conference to be held in the village of Giong, a traditional village of Vietnamese, it is now the part of 4 villages: Phu Duc, Dong Vien, Dong Xuyen, and Phu Dong commune, Gia Lam district, Hanoi. Hoi Giong is held to commemorate, honor and celebrate Saint Giong – teenage heroes of the nation. It will take place within 7 days, from the 6th to 12th day of the fourth lunar month and the 9th day is the main festival.
Along with festivals, events in the country and internationally are taken place in the provinces and regions of Vietnam, such as Cherry Blossom Festival, cultural exchange festival in Ba Na Hills.
